Christian Schools Blogsite Discussion

Around the world there is a wonderful diversity of Christian schools. This blogsite includes articles and promotional videos for, and about, Christian schools. The inclusion of material is not an endorsement.

Hopefully these articles, videos and examples from around the world will help parents better understand the different visions of Christian schools. The goal is for parents to be better equipped to ask questions. It may help Christian schools evaluate what messages they are sending out to their community.

Tyndale Christian School Blacktown Sydney

Monday, April 09, 2012

Tyndale Christian School in Blacktown Sydney is a parent controlled school and part of Christian Education National.  This promotional video includes interviews with pioneers, Principal, staff, students and parents. The emphasis on Christianity is very obvious.

The video includes a fascinating historical perspective connecting why the Dutch immigrants to Australia were so passionate about the education of their children.

Tyndale Christian School in Sydney Australia decided in their video to make their Christianity very clear. It is not just teachers but also students and parents who mention it.

The video combines young and older students - is a little scripted at times but not too smooth which works well. Deliberately gives a good feel for the multi-cultural nature of the school community.

Emmaeus Christian School Canberra Australia

Tuesday, March 22, 2011
Emmaeus Christian School in Canberra Australia choose to use video to help its school community meet and here from the Board. Many schools have boards. They are often unknown by the majority of the school community and  work behind the scenes. What they do is also often unknown. In this simple, low quality video, we hear from the Principal and Board members. Each of them explain about their own children. This helps other parents identify and connect with them.

They then go on to explain the importance of Christian education. This video has a warmth and unscripted nature about it but it is clear the school is committed to helping parents raise their children. It isn't a video about facilities but rather vision and people.

They then had a year 8 student take you on a tour of the school. They meet and hear from students and staff as they talk about the school. It's light hearted but engaging. It doesn't present a "polished" view of school life. Using students means other students are more likely to both watch and share the video.

Launceston Christian School Tasmania

Monday, December 20, 2010
The promotional video for Launceston Christian School in Tasmania is short, has no voiceover or interviews but works remarkably well. The use of 'paper' text inside the video is very clever. The video gives a good insight to the Christian school without 'selling' it. It feels natural. Rather than saying it is an coeducational school from Kindy to High School it just shows a variety of age groups involved with school work and in community.

Covenant Christian School Sydney School Tour on DVD

Thursday, September 30, 2010
In September 2008 Covenant Christian School on Sydney’s Northern Beaches launched an 8 minute School Tour on DVD. The DVD was created to help parents learn more about the school. If they liked the DVD then they were encouraged to attend a physical school tour.

The most important element in the video was the opportunity for prospective parents to hear from other Christian parents.

Since launching, over 2,500 copies of the DVD have been given out to members of the community. For the school it has been an effective method for existing school families to promote the school to friends. The DVD’s deliberate inclusion of the role of Christianity in the school may also have discouraged some parents from proceeding further. The school feels this is a better approach then misleading or downplaying the emphasis the school has simply to attract more families.

The professional producers of the DVD (www.tdhmedia.com.au) were instructed to not make the video too flashy. It was important to be consistent with the look and feel of the school. While many promotional videos for schools include the Principal as a spokesperson the school decided to only include comments from parents about him.

Each week copies of the DVD are requested from Covenant’s school website http://www.covenant.nsw.edu.au/request-school-tour-dvd.html The 8 minute video is now also included on YouTube below.

Orange Christian School is located in the city of Orange in New South Wales Australia.

The objective of this promotional video was to project the following three key message points about Orange Christian School.

1. Christ centered environment, that collaborates with parents for the best interest of the children.
2. An education facility that seeks to develop well rounded individuals, as well as good scholastic outcomes.
3. Non denominational school that treats all students equally. ( not church based, but Christ based)

Hope Christian School Sydney

Wednesday, June 30, 2010
Hope Christian School Narellan Sydney is a member of Christian Education National. This promotional video is a wonderful combination of short interviews with parents, staff and students. This is one of the few videos I have seen which include a variety of pastors. Also by deliberately presenting lots of parents early on in the video they engage with prospective parents questions very well. They then have teachers talk more about the school.

Some quotes: “integrate faith and learning”, “parent friendly”, “encourage and welcome parents into classrooms”, “can grow in faith without being judged”. The video also describes how the interaction between junior school and senior school students works.

As a new school Hope Christian School has been finding clever ways to do marketing.

The video on this link is not on the Why Christian School DVD.  It’s inclusion on this blogsite is not an endorsement of the school. The video is simply included to help parents hear from a variety of staff and parents involved in Christian Schools around the world. If you know of other suitable videos please let us know.
